*What
is Ayurveda?
|
Ayurveda means
the "Science
of Life".
It originated in India more than 10,000 years ago and is believed to
be the oldest healing science in existence, from which all other
systems emerged. This ancient Indian system of cure uses a holistic
approach using herbs/natural ingredients - without side effects. As
against Allopathy that gives a symptomatic suppression of an ailment
Ayurveda eliminates the factors that cause the ailment taking both
the internal and external environment of the human being into
consideration. The most complete and detailed text on Ayurveda is the
"CHARAKA SAMHITA" written in the 6th century B.C.
Time tested
thro' observation and studies by Rishi-physicians, the knowledge was
recorded on ancient palm leaves and handed down the generations.

|
The difference
between the 'Holistic' Ayurveda System of medicine and other
Reductionist Systems. |
|
Reductionist
Systems |
Holistic-Ayurvedic
System |
|
The human body
is compared to a machine which can be analyzed in terms of its parts. |
An individual
is considered as a non-divisible unity, an integrated whole which
cannot be reduced in terms of its parts, nor can the individual be
separated from the social cultural and ritual environment and the
cosmic link. |
|
An illness is
seen as the malfunctioning of its (body-machine) parts. |
An illness is
viewed as the consequence of disharmony within the cosmic order. It
is not limited in space and time. |
|
The various
mechanism of the body are understood at biological and molecular
levels, and malfunctions are treated by physical and / or chemical
intervention. Thus, for the purpose of treatment, body and mind are
considered as separate entities. |
Malfunctions
are understood and treated in the context of the social, cultural and
spiritual environment. For the purpose of treatment, body, mind and
soul are considered integral. |
|
Chance plays
as important role in phenomena causing disease. |
The universe
is perfectly organized whole where nothing happens without reason or
fortuitously and everything is moving toward a definite goal. It is
not a meaningless combination and separation of chemicals occurring
by chance that causes disease. |
|
Both time and
matter are reduced to smaller units. |
Matter is
interlinked, interconnected, dynamic. It is constantly changing and
it is this transformation that denotes time. Time is eternal. |
